Ruschenberger describes his journey, which had the purpose to obtain information and negotiating and securing treaties of friendship and commerce with Eastern powers. The journey went to the dominions of the Sultan of Muscat and Oman, to Ceylon, India, Java, Siam, Cochin China and the Bonin Islands, the Hawaiian Islands, California and Mexico.
"Sketches in China", dated June 1836, are found on pp. 347-434. "Sketches in Java", on pp. 211-248, contain information on the Chinese there.
