Captain McLeod's unsuccessful mission of 1836 is the first official British attempt to find an overland route to China.
After this came a succession of other ventures from Assam and Burma, all - for one reason or another - failures. These culminated in the famous and ill-fated Dual Mission in 1874-1875. This was a joint attempt to explore West China from the Burmese and Chines sides, narrated by A. D. Blue.
