AURIFABER, AEGIDIUS. Speculum exemplorum omnibus christicolis salubriter inspiciendum ut exemplis discant disciplinam. Argentina (Strassburg, printer of the 1483 Jordanus of Quedlinburg = Georg Huser) 1495.

4:o (278x197 mm.). 285 leaves (of 286, lacks last blank). 2 columns, 52 lines. Initials not filled in.
Later (17th century) brown full calf, somewhat worn and faded, spotted spine in five compartments, small damage at foot, speckled edges. Title mended in lower margin. Very minor foxing. Old partly erased stamp in lower margin of first leaf after title. Title with signature of A. H. Walbaum, Salfeldiae (Saalfeld) 1795.

Hain 14919; GW 42959. Long attributed to Aegidius Aurifaber, it is now considered the work of Johannes Busch.
This collection first appeared in 1481, and is a compilation of monk's legends after the "Gesta Romanorum", and from works by Gregorius Magnus, Petrus Amianus, Hieronymus Presbyter, Beda, and others. Intended only for sermons, to serve as good moral examples.
