A Capriccio view of the Moscow Kremlin
Oil on canvas, 54 x 75 cm.
The painting was probably commissioned by the diplomat Count Lars von Engeström (1751-1826). He was envoy at the court in Warsaw 1790, during which period he tried to place Gustav III on the Polish throne. Engeström was later appointed Foreign Minister by Karl XIII. The topographical mistakes would suggest that the picture was painted outside Russia by a painter working from engravings.
