4002. Brakenburg

BRAKENBURG, REINIER - LE MIRE, NOEL. "La Curiosité". About 1760-65.
Engraved plate, trimmed to platemark, about 340x400 (including text in lower margin). Under passepartout. Good condition.
Print shows a country fair scene with a fore runner of a peep box with children and adults mirroring all kinds of emotions viewing the "show". - Although this artwork was painted (1660) long before the peep box came into use with the typical copper etchings showing scenes of the world, this etching belongs into the chain of amusement happenings leading on to what we know as the peepbox, vue d´optique or Guckkasten.
